In towns and cities across Scotland you will find numerous examples of the mercat cross (no, not market – or meerkat!) The mercat cross was originally a place where merchants would gather to buy and sell goods, but later became the true focal point of towns, and would play host to important events such as announcements, proclamations and even executions. In Glasgow the Mercat Cross is just a short walk from the heart of the Merchant City and the city’s stunning cathedral, also known as the High Kirk of Glasgow.
