THE ROUTE

This Stratford-upon-Avon walking tour begins directly outside Shakespeare’s Birthplace, where William Shakespeare was born, grew up, and later lived the early part of his married life. You then move on to Rothermarket for a glimpse of the American Fountain. You will pass by Harvard House, where you’ll discover the link between Stratford-upon-Avon and one of the USA’s leading universities. You might be tempted for a pint at the Garrick Inn, reputed to be the oldest pub in the town, dating back to the 1400s. At Nash’s House and New Place, you’ll find the last house in which Shakespeare lived, and where he died in 1616. Next up is Hall’s Croft, the home of Shakespeare’s daughter. And, within the walls of Holy Trinity Church, you’ll have the chance to see where Shakespeare is buried.

As you head towards the end of the tour, you’ll pass through Avonbank Gardens, eventually reaching the Swan Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, where the works of the great playwright continue to be performed. Beyond the theatre, you’ll find Bancroft Gardens and its nearby canal basin. Your final stop before you complete your circular tour is the Gower Memorial, featuring Shakespeare and four characters from his plays.
